CHINA — Chinese artist Zhang Xiong won the $2,2 million (about $1.8 million) prize Thursday in a painting contest in China.
The painting, called “Bao Xiang,” is on display at the Kunming Art Museum.
The artist won the competition, which was held in Shanghai’s Zhongshan art district, for the painting titled “Baidu China,” which depicts a woman and her dog on the roof of a building.
The painting is titled “The House of the People,” a title that means “The People.”
Zhang said in a statement that it was a message for China’s citizens that Beijing is doing everything it can to bring the country’s citizens closer to democracy.
The Chinese Communist Party also gave Zhang a medal for the art.
“The painting conveys a message of hope and development that is very close to the hearts of Chinese people,” Zhang said.
“In the face of the current problems, China’s people have a very strong desire for a better life and a more prosperous future.
The government should not let the world down.”
